Dairy Cows…. Sizing Ionizer and Poly Holding Tank

Existing data indicates numerous benefits for Dairy farmers when Ionized Alkaline Water is used to water cows. Increases in milk production, protein and butterfat content will be realized.

We will look at the capacity of two of our Ionizers. Water consumption is based on existing data from the ministry of agriculture in Canada. Average water consumption per cow is 115 litres per day (30.2 us gallons) as an overall herd average taking into account various stages of lactation.

Ionizer capacity based on running 18 hrs a day 24/7

NT-2000 = 20 lpm X 60 min X 18hrs = 21,600 lpd (5.26 gpm X 60 min X 18 hrs = 5,680 gpd)
NT-5000 = 50 lpm X 60 min X 18hrs = 54,000 lpd (13.2 gpm X 60 min X 18 hrs = 14,256 gpd)

Consumption @ 115 litres per cow (Averaged)

A setup that does not require a pressure tank and pump would be the most inexpensive and that would involve having the Ionizer and holding tank elevated. Failing that a pump and pressure tank will be necessary.

The ideal setup will have the potable source water going first through a 5 micron particulate filter then the ionizer and then the poly holding tank (Plus pump and pressure tank if necessary) The poly holding tank should be sized at approx. 1/15th the total daily water requirement. ie the NT-2000 should have a poly tank approx. 1600 litres = 400 gal. and the float set to start ionizer at the 800 litre (200 gal) mark.
Float system must be used for full automation and bypass system is recommended. (Bypass system will automatically reroute water in case of power failure so cows always have water)
